More than your flower girl…

Jen’s success in the flower garden shares a secret in common with her glorious garlic, plump pumpkins, and - here’s a hint - fresh, pasture-raised eggs that are as colourful as her dahlias: her fancy chickens, for whom her love knows no bounds.

From clearing grass and spreading manure, to gently tilling, aerating, and fertilizing the soil, to clearing it of grubs, weeds, pests, and wayward seeds, to keeping her company in amongst the dahlias, Jenny’s hennies are busy at work improving the soil and making her laugh all the while.

Whatever fruits, vegetables and table scraps they don’t eat (and Jen’s hens have the luxury of being very pecky picky), they turn to compost rich in hummus and nutrients, which in turn feed the soil and everything that grows in it. The flowers, fruits, vegetables, berry bushes and orchard trees all love it, and every year they get happier and healthier still.

The fat of the land upon Blackacre comes in all stripes, colours and flavours, from sourdough to maple syrup. And the chickens get lots of credit, and lots of love, for what they help to bring forth, including eggs, garlic, gourds…and more chickens! All of which are available upon inquiry subject to seasonality, availability, and - when it comes to chickens - suitability, their being friends not food.
